Lady Lost by Debra Brill
First hints of fall colors and sunshine shimmered through the trees as we made our way to the car. Lunch conversation was the usual banter, and my thoughts were now focused on what to do first back at the office.
Opening the door, I sensed eyes on me. There was no sound, just a feeling that there was someone. I turned and there she walked, shoulders crouched, her approach at the same time tentative yet intentional. My ears began to hear the words, “Husband left.., job lost…” Oh my, I’ve heard these words before.
I was still standing at the open door, my first impulse to ignore, to move along as I have so often done. I looked at her again, her face anguished, her voice so small against the big, empty parking lot. She was so alone.
She was still taking as I walked toward her, embarrassed, eager to see me come yet trying to slink back from my approach. Before I could hand my token gift into hers, the words spilled out, “I’m so hungry…I’m so hungry,” and she began to weep, tears spilling onto half-washed cheeks.
Her body shook with emotion. I asked her name and told her I would pray for her. She thanked me over and over, and again, “I’m so hungry.” I hugged her, then watched her walk to the fast food across the parking lot. She was gone.
I wish I could share this with her. Jesus said, “Two sparrows cost only a penny, but not even one of them can die without your Father’s knowing it. God even knows how many hairs are on your head. So don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many sparrows.” [Matthew 10:29-31]
May God always open my eyes and ears and arms for those hungry, hurting, lost ones He places in my path.
