Baptism Celebration
One of the great missed opportunities for connecting with the community is the baptismal service. If it was half the celebration on earth that I am sure it is in heaven, we would have a ball. I have experienced something that came close. After several months of preparation and preaching, we were conducting the first of two baptisms on the island of Bermuda. The celebrations were unbelievable. It sounded like each baptismal candidate brought a personal cheering squad! The scene was electric and absolutely unforgettable. Baptisms like that deeply impress visitors and provide memories that will not soon be forgotten.
When a baptism is scheduled, let the candidates know well in advance. Encourage them to personally invite all their friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors. Some churches have invitations printed so the candidates can mail announcements. This is a great idea when it is combined with personal calls and invitations. If the baptism is held as a part of the worship service, make the service extra special. Great music, a good message and friendly people are essential. The families get involved as each candidate is recognized, baptized, and presented a certificate and the right hand of fellowship. Conclude the service with a special reception or fellowship meal.
For a change, try an afternoon or evening baptism. The larger the number of candidates the greater the excitement, so this service works well after a major evangelistic effort. Follow the same formula of making the service special and celebrating together. Include testimonies from the candidates if time permits. It is a great witness to the visitors.
