This is a great outreach, especially to single mothers. We probably underestimate the amount of money many families spend on car repairs that could have been prevented by simple maintenance. There may be car mechanics or car enthusiasts in your congregation who would willingly participate in an outreach event that taps into their love for cars. Many churches offer this service to members and neighbors on a regular basis. There is no better way to reach some families than to meet this basic need.
First, determine what services you will offer. This will help you make other important decisions. It is best to limit your service to oil changes, brief inspections or perhaps tune-ups. Recruit mechanics who will donate their time and services. Depending on the service, the church parking lot may be used. Or you may opt for a local auto garage. Always be familiar with city codes and regulations.
When you’ve chosen a place you must get the word out. Concentrate on the neighborhoods closest to the location of the service and blanket those areas with information. Don’t advertise beyond those areas, however, or local mechanics may view the ministry as competition.
Do not charge or even receive donations for this outreach. You may discover the need to establish a more extensive and ongoing auto repair service which would appropriately solicit donations, but that is an entirely different service. Finally, be especially careful with the cars. Monitor all service to prevent a “bad apple” from taking advantage or making false claims of damage.
