Neighborhood Talent Show
Thank the television blockbuster American Idol for the popularity of this idea. Talent shows work best in apartment complexes that have a meeting room or a clubhouse. Better yet, have the talent show outdoors on the apartment lawn. The summer months when students are out of school are best.
Ideally, you should locate a complex near the church. If you are satisfied that the facilities will accommodate the crowd and equipment you expect, reserve it with a deposit. It is important to have a signed contract to avoid scheduling conflicts and managers who change their minds.
Blanket the targeted area with fliers. If possible, take the fliers door-to-door. In the event you choose an apartment complex that does not allow solicitation, be prepared to use other forms of media: radio, newspaper, apartment club house bulletin boards, etc. If approached, neighborhood supermarkets will sometimes donate food and paper goods.
Be sure to encourage church members to attend and ask participants to bring along friends and family for support. Depending on the number and ages of participants you can have one category or a number of categories. Be careful to screen the performances for appropriateness. In fact, it is important to have clear performance guidelines in the hands of everyone before they register. For some performers this will be their rare moment in the spotlight, so make the talent show special. Choose fair-minded judges who will take their responsibilities seriously. You might consider having a “finals round” at the church or handing out invitations to an upcoming VBS.
