I enjoyed watching Tony Dungy and the Indianapolis Colts win the Super Bowl. But I enjoyed the Super Bowl party more. I sat with a rowdy bunch of men of all ages from a local church in Orange County, California. We were in the spacious living room of one of the members. I didn’t belong to the church, but some friends invited me over and I came. It was great! What they did is a simple but effective outreach/fellowship idea that any church or church member can do.
The men of the church simply decided to gather for a Super Bowl Party. To make things more interesting, they started a few hours before the game with a chili cook-off. They were competing to see who made the best chili, and of course the judges (or should I say the victims) were those of us who came. What a wonderful idea and a great time! The men came in droves, and brought their sons. The room was overrun with testosterone. By the time the game began, there was hardly any room left around the big-screen television.
The beauty was that the men invited their buddies. I met a number of fellows I didn’t know and I am sure that other non-church members did also. You couldn’t help being impressed with the relationships of the men in the church as they joked with each other and rooted for their favorite team. The food and the conversation were warm and enjoyable. But more than that, it made you want to check out their church. It doesn’t get any better than that.
It’s not rocket science. Just find a friendly home with food and a decent television. Invite the men of the church and tell them to invite their friends. Then have a great time!
