Back-to-School Book Bag Bash!
Many churches in many large urban areas can attest that this ministry really works. The idea is to tap into the energy and interest in back to school preparation. It is a nervous time for many parents and young children because of separation anxiety and the rising costs of school materials. In some households the back to school season is more expensive than the Christmas season. Many parents are also unsure what they will face when they register their kids for the first time.
If your church has an education department or teachers who are willing to help, encourage them to put together a series of brief presentations to inform parents about what to expect at the local schools. If possible, invite representatives from the schools to speak to the group. Information can be presented on school safety, registration procedures, transportation issues, meals, tutoring options, after-school programs, athletic programs and more. The presentations should be fast-moving and tightly scheduled.
The highlight of the event is distributing free book bags or tennis shoes or whatever the church determines to the students. Notebooks and pencils may be a better choice for some churches. Budgets will vary, but the principle is the same — giving away school related materials. There are probably vendors in every community who are prepared to donate free products if their businesses are promoted in some way. Be careful to accept only safe and appropriate products, and be aware of any possible legal entanglements or expectations. But go after the free stuff!! And remember to call the local media; they love these stories.
