What an opportunity to connect with the community and meet an important need! Communities everywhere are trying to raise the level of awareness regarding the importance of recycling. In some communities the citizens are more passionate about recycling than their local governments. Either way, recycling is a great idea for community outreach.
Determine a day and location for the event. The parking lot of the church is great. It’s imperative to get the word out: word of mouth, fliers in the neighborhood, announcements at community events, etc. Work with appropriate agencies to provide collection of items that are large or difficult to dispose of, such as computer parts, motor oil, electronic equipment, appliances and paint. You will be amazed at the number of people who are looking for an opportunity to get rid of certain items and will thank you for providing a way to do it.
Make sure there are plenty of smiling faces and free, healthy refreshments at the drop-off point. Invite appropriate officials to be a part of the receiving crew. Ask various organizations to provide material about recycling. And remember to contact the local media outlets. This is the type of project that appeals to many local newspapers and television stations.
