It was about 40 years ago, but I still remember the excitement of studying the Bible with kids my age at the home of a friendly neighbor. Times have changed, but the neighborhood kids Bible Club concept still works around the globe. The earlier we reach young people the more likely they are to make a decision for Christ.
It is absolutely essential to select a children’s leader who has demonstrated a passion for kids and a gift for age-appropriate instruction. Everything rises and falls on the teacher. The Bible study (which is what Bible Clubs actually are) can be held at the home of the leader or hosted by someone else. Recruit the neighborhood kids through fliers, interaction with parents, word of mouth or other means. Choose study materials from your local ABC or a good Christian bookstore. Vacation Bible School material works well for these clubs. Choose an evening for orientation and emphasize the need for parents or guardians to be present.
On orientation night introduce the group members, the hosts and the teacher. This is your first opportunity to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. First impressions are lasting ones, so carefully plan this orientation so it will be a fantastic meeting. The material should be overviewed and explained. Pass out a schedule with meeting dates and times. If certain holidays or vacations coincide with meeting times, decide if the group will meet on those dates. Discuss refreshments and decide whether they be served before or after the meeting. Answer any questions.
